DEBORAH MILES-JOHNSON has been the conductor of the Imperial Male Voice Choir since 1979. A graduate of the Royal College of Music in London, she took part in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas as performed by the nearby Imperial College Operatic Society where she met most of the friends who were to make up the Male Voice Choir. Subsequently a member of the BBC Singers, the Tallis Scholars and the Sixteen she now fulfils a busy and varied career as a singer, teacher and conductor. She also works as vocal coach to the BBC Symphony Chorus and works with many other prestigious London choirs.
As a mezzo-soprano she has worked with most of the world’s leading conductors including Sir Simon Rattle performing Stravinsky’s Requiem Canticles; Sir Georg Solti in Mozart’s Don Giovanni in Germany and Sir Bernard Haitinck in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger at the Royal Opera House. She also recently sang Fricka in Das Rheingold in concert. She has been included on many commercial recordings including The Beggars Opera and one of the Converse in the EMI recording of Suor Angelica. Future engagements include Mahler’s eighth symphony at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2011.She has also taken part in the backing music for many films including the latest Shrek movie but also ‘Star Wars', ‘Harry Potter’ and all three ‘Lord of the Rings’ films.
